A History of the Greta Coal Measures (1861-1998)
For over twenty years, Mr. Jack Delaney, 79, has recorded 497 interviews on everything from mining disasters to pit ponies. Mr. Delaney, a former South Maitland Railway traffic manager who retired in 1979, recorded in exhaustive detail the history and personal stories of 66 collieries once working in Greta, Maitland, Kurri Kurri and Cessnock from 1861 to 1998. One mine remains.
As each story was taped by Mr. Delaney, valuable genealogical information was given, such as where the family came from, who they married and other family information as well as information about the mines. Hundreds of other names, such as neighbours, mine managers, tradespeople in the area etc. were given, making these tapes a priceless gift to the Hunter. This information is now on CD and is available for sale from the Newcastle Regional Museum.
The CD contains
1. A summary of each interview
2. The names of the people mentioned in the interview
3. The code number of the audio interview tape
4. Photographs and maps of the mines
