TASMANIA

In 1838, an Act was passed to establish the compulsory registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Tasmania. Prior to that date, only Church Registers exist. An index is available on both microfiche and CD-Rom. All records before 1900 have been transferred from the Registrar General to the Archives Office, and are available on microfilm.
Indexes to Deaths and Marriages available to 1919.
The Newcastle Region Library holds a set of these microfilm NNPL (Microfiche)

The Tasmanian Pioneer Index, 1803-1899 is available on CD-Rom. This let your ask the computer for a single element or a combination of the elements used in the index, such as father's name, mother's name, place of registration; rather than merely by the name of the main person involved. NNPL (CD-Rom)

What the index tells you:
for BIRTHS is provides the name of child, christian names of parents, place of registration, year and registration number.

for DEATHS is provides name of deceased, place of registration, year and register number, plus parent's christian names. If year and place of death are given in index instead of parent's names, this means that those names do not appear on certificate.

The Registers contain all the information collected by the Registrar at the time. NNPL (Microfilm)

These contain one alphabetical sequence, organised by the name of the main person involved within the above time period, grouping all events, birth, death or marriage, together for each surname.

From 1920 the indexes are on microfiche divided into type of event - Births, Death or Marriage - sometimes a year, sometimes a span of years. The reference number enables a copy of the certificate to be obtained from the Registrar.

The indexes are also available on CD-Rom. This lets your ask the computer for a single element or a combination of the elements used in the index, such as father's name, mother's name, place of registration; rather than merely by the name of the main person involved.
