1788-1856
The only records that existed before the government registration of baptisms, marriages and burials began in March 1856 are Church Records. Indexes to these are available on microfiche and CD-Rom. Some registers are also available on microfilm. Not all registers survived, and many people may not have been baptised by a minister or been buried by a minister, especially if they lived in the country. There may be no record of a birth, burial or marriage before 1856.

1856-1918 Births, 1856-1945 Deaths and Marriages
The Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages has released indexes of births to 1918, and of deaths and marriages to 1945. The certificates themselves are not held at local libraries. Obtaining the index number enables you to purchase a copy of the certificate from the Registrar. The indexes are divided into three time periods. The 'Pioneer Index' covers the time period 1788-1888 (green heading). The 'Federation Index' covers the time period 1888-1918 (blue heading). The 'Between the Wars' covers deaths and marriages only from 1919 to 1945 (pink heading). The indexes on microfiche contain births, deaths and marriages arranged by the name of the main person involved.

The indexes are also available on CD-Rom. This lets you ask the computer for a single element or a combination of the elements used in the index, such as father's name, mother's name, place of registration; rather than merely by the name of the main person involved.

Information required on NSW Birth, Death & Marriage Certificates 1856+
What the index tells you:-
for BIRTHS it provides the name of child, christian names of parents, place of registration, year and registration number.
for MARRIAGES it provides surname and christian names of both parties, place of registration, year and register number.
for DEATHS it provides name of deceased, place of registration, year and register number, plus parents' christian names. If year and place of death are given in index instead of parents' names, this means that those names do not appear on the certificate.

DEATHS
Index to wills and probates, 1800-1985
Very useful as this gives usual place of residence and exact date of death, as well as probate number. Copies of wills available from Probate Division, Supreme Court of NSW. Main drawback is that not everyone leaves a will or dies intestate with letters of administration.
