Here is a list of documents that can be found in the archives office that have some relevance to the 'Jewboy gang'.
I have transcribed these documents, but posting them here would need to be approved by the archives office - so I will give a bit of a summary of the contents of each document over the next few months or so (if anyone is interested).

1. Wollombi Letters 23/2/1840 - 3/5/1866 in SRNSW Call No. 4/5698 - Letter dated 22/12/1840 from David Dunlop to Acting Police Magistrate, Maitland.

This is a letter where David Dunlop (Police Magistrate of Wollombi) reports to the Police Magistrate of Maitland that he believes the fact that the 'Jewboy' gang had fresh made white bread on the day they raided at Wollombi means that they had 'friends in a camp not far from Sugar Loaf Mountain' and suggested a joint raid on the area, which he offered to lead, involving the police of Maitland and Wollombi.

In this letter David Dunlop (Police Magistrate of Wollombi) reports to William Timothy Cape that three horses stolen from Cape's property at Wyong and left by the 'Jewboy' gang in Wollombi have been returned to Mr Solling (manager of Cape's property). He also reports to Cape that property he reported as stolen was not recovered.

This is a letter from David Dunlop to Alfred Holden (Police Magistrate of Brisbane Water - Gosford) in which he reports that horses have been returned to Mr Solling of Wyong, and he also reports that the Jewboy gang had left a silk handkerchief with Holden's name on it (stolen when the gang robbed Holden's property at Dora Creek?).

This is a deposition by a man named John Davis who described himself as a 'servant of all work' working for a man named Henry Denny at Ried's Mistake (Swansea). Davis describes property stolen from Boyce (a sack full of 'plate') and Hely (a plaid cloak) which ended up in the possesion of Denny.

5. Brisbane Water Bench Books, Depositions 1835-1842 in SRNSW Call No. 4/5524 on Reel No. 664 - Deposition dated 7/7/1841 given by Dennis Dwyer to Gother Mann.


This is a deposition given by Dennis Dwyer, the Chief Constable of the Brisbane Water district, in which he describes being led to the remains of the camp used by the 'Jewboy' gang by John Davis and James Freeman (a small settler who had the gang stay overnight in his hut - but was not robbed). Dwyer described the camp as being 'half a mile or a mile from Denny's' hut.

This is a memo written by one of the Magistrates based in Gosford about the evidence needed to prove a case of harbouring the bushrangers (jewboy gang) against Henry Denny of Reid's Mistake (Swansea).

7. Brisbane Water Bench Books, Depositions 1835-1842 in SRNSW Call No. 4/5524 on Reel No. 664 - Deposition dated 16/7/1841 given by Edward Hely to Gother Mann.

This deposition is by a man who was robbed twice by the gang. He describes them as 'Marshall's gang' (Marshall was the other leading member of the gang after Davis) and describes a coat stolen by the gang as 'a McKintosh coat with a plaid lining'. In an earlier deposition the coat was described by John Davis (an informer) as 'a plaid cloak'.

A copy of a letter sent from Alfred Holden, the Police Magistrate of Brisbane Water (Gosford), to recommend three convicts for pardons for actions they took when the 'Jewboy' gang was raiding his district. He recommended Robert Northwood for a pardon for his actions when the gang robbed two properties at Wyong, Patrick Hennesey for his actions when the gang robbed Newport (Dora Creek), and Patrick Brady for giving information against the gang during their time around Lake Macquarie.
