Hancey/Smith/Skippen/Williams/Upper Paterson

To all who replied to this post, Thank you. And now I would like to remove the Hancy notation- because my main interest is , in fact, the Smith family as well as any association with Upper Paterson.

For followers of the Hancey family pls refer to Ron Norton's book, Along the Nine Mile published in 2007, ISBN 978-0-646-47125-9.

Catherine (Hancey) Williams died on 24 Oct 1879 and is bured in St Peter's East Maitland.

Smith, John Thomas in the Glebe Cemetery is NOT the Smith line which I am following. Thomas Smith came to Australia with his parents form Calaifs Franc when he was 15 and never lived in Sydney.

Cheers. OA

Do you have a wife for Thomas ?

Do you know the religion of the family, will make it easier to search my records if I know the religion, there are a lot of William & Thomas SMITH's in the Maitland Cemetery

Hi Barry,

do not know how you work out name of Gawthrop.

The information is what I have found looking at various family trees on Ancesty.

Name: Henry Gawthroup Birth: Abt 1833 - Histon, England Death: 02 Dec 1871 (2 Dec 1871) - Warialda, New South Wales, Australia Marriage: 17 Oct 1853 - Histon, Cambridgeshire, England Parents: James Gawthroup, Sarah Ann Norman Spouse: Eliza Robinson.

The above are the parents of Esther and brothers & sister below[i haven't listed all of them]. Most appeared to have changed their name to Goldthorpe, indeed Henry Gawthroup's name is listed as Gawthringh arriving on the Columbia in 1854. Henry is is reported to have died from a fall from a horse 1871.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article ... Term=Henry Gawthrop warialda#pstart137874
.....Miss Mary Gawthrop, formerly of Warialda, please Send Your Address once to Mr. James Bowman, of near Warialda.... Mary Gawthrop [Golthorpe] had three children to an unknown male all of the children were named Goldthorpe. Mary married William Bowman in 1878.

Name: Alfred Gewthorpe Birth Date: 1864 Father's Name: Henry Gewthorpe Mother's Name: Eliza Birth Place: New South Wales Registration Year: 1864 Registration Place: Patricks Plain, New South Wales Registration Number: 13163

13357/1866 Gawthrop Charles, Parents - Henry & Elizabeth, Patick Plains.
2267/1893 Goldthorpe Charles m. Ann Gaurdern, Bingara.
Death: 13710/1935 Goldthorpe Charles 75 yrs, Barraba.
While charles was registered as Gawthrop he changed his name when married .

It's usually a sign they were illiterate.
They would tell an official their name, and each official would spell it differently.

Hello

I am a bit confused regarding Thomas Smith, he married Frances Williams in 1855 and she died in 1881, he seems to then have married Matilda L Kerr (nee Williams) sister of Frances in 1883 at Maitland

BDM has Frances' father on the death record as James Williams yet BDM for birth has Jacob Williams ?

BDM has a Matilda L Smith dead at Warialda in 1920, but states her father as Charles, are you aware if this person is Matilda Williams ?

BDM has 3 children recorded against Jacob and many under James, are they one and the same ?

I appreciate that BDM records are only as good as the information given to them (my mother in law found out at age 60 that her recorded birth name was diffrent than that she was known by and her birth date was 2 days out) but it does make life interesting

Any details on the above would be greatfully appreciated

Kind Regards, Barry Ford

I have just answered my own question, most information was contained on the WWW under Derby Assizes 1814, there was some 6 pages of information regarding Williams.
Still trying to ascertain if Miltilda Smith death 1920 is Matilda Williams

barry, Matilda Smith, death of March 10, 1920 was Matilda Lucinda Williams. she married Thomas smith after the death of her first husband Charles kerr. Thomas Smith had been married to Matilda's older sister Frances Charlotte (nee Williams). frances and Thomas were the parents of Henry and Alexander Thomas (and others).
