Richard George, convict

Do you have a convict in your family? Tell us about him/her, doesn't have to be a convict who settled in the Hunter.

Richard George, convict

Postby jbbolton on Sat Jul 31, 2010 12:02 pm

In error, I wrote about my family convict, Richard George, under the heading 'Cheers Family'. Richard was my gg grandfather. My grandmother, Lavina Cheers, is a descendant of Richard Cheers and she married James Fenwick George, a descendant of the convict, Richard George.

Hope this is not too confusing.

Any information about Richard George or the Beckett family would be greatly appreciated. Richard George and Susannah Beckett had 9 children. They did not marry. Richard was married in England before he was convicted. Refer to 'Cheers Family' for more info.

Thanks, Margaret,

Richard George came on the Barossa 8 Dec 1839 and I have all the info from Lesley's disk and from State Records re his crime, sentence, marital status, appearance, etc.

I do have some information on him (refer to post on 'Cheers and Family Convicts' for more family details). He was a naughty fellow as he absconded from the Hunter River region in 1841 and was caught and returned to his master, W J Hickey in 1842.

At some time he worked on the 'farm' Lydney, which at the time was owned (or rented) by Richard Beckett. It was Richard's daughter, Susan/Susannah that he met and had 9 children with. They did not marry.

He must have turned out OK as he was granted a 'Ticket of Freedom' on 1 Dec 1846. I also have noted that he, along with Richard Beckett, made donations to the local Patriotic Fund, so he can't have been all bad.

Any further information would assist in painting 'the whole picture'.

Hi,
No they did not have a son, Peter.

Their children were as follows:
Matthew born 1 Oct 1852 at Miller's Forest
Mary Ann born 30 May 1855 at Miller's Forest
James G born 1 Dec 1857 at Miller's Forest (My great grandfather)
Frances 'Fanny' born 15 July 1860 Manning River (registered at Wingham)
John born 4 Sept 1862 Manning River
Esther born 9 Dec 1864 Manning River
Ellen born 3 Aug 1867 Manning River
Richard born 7 March 1870 Manning River
Henrietta A born 13 June 1872 Manning River

Some of the children were registered on NSW BDM as 'George' and some as 'Beckett' as they did not marry. Richard died 1876 and Susannah married Thomas Perry in 1879. Susannah died in Sydney in 1899.

Some of the children would have been very young when Richard died.
