Buxton Headstone & Inscription at Christ Church Cathedral Cemetery
This article was contributed by Ian Berick of South Australia, his wife is a descendant of Thomas & Mary Buxton via their son James William A History of the Buxton Family in Newcastle The Buxton Headstone & Inscription Among a cluster of very old tombs at the entrance gate to the Cathedral Churchyard there is one which covers the family vault of the Buxton family. There are a number of inscriptions on the memorial, which read as follows:- | |

Sacred to the memory of MARY ANN BUXTON Eldest daughter of Thomas and Mary Buxton Who departed this life on the 18th of Nov; 1848 Aged 17 "Beneath the hallowed stone is laid, in death's embrace, a spotless maid, To this vain world she bade adieu Before the ways of sin she knew. Her parents may their offspring mourn, And vainly wish for her return, But humbly let them kiss the rod, And yield her to her parent, God." Also ALBERT BUXTON Who departed this life, April 3, 1850 Aged 3 years CHARLES EDWARD BUXTON Who died May 9, 1854 Aged 11 years Likewise the above-named THOMAS BUXTON Who departed this life On the 2nd of Sept, 1861 Aged 65 Also JAMES WILLIAM BUXTON Died Oct. 11, 1880 Aged 32 Also MARY Wife of the above-named Thomas Buxton Died Oct. 4, 1884 Aged 77 |
