Buxton Headstone & Inscription at Christ Church Cathedral Cemetery

A History of the Buxton Family in Newcastle
The Buxton Headstone & Inscription
Among a cluster of very old tombs at the entrance gate to the Cathedral Churchyard there is one which covers the family vault of the Buxton family. There are a number of inscriptions on the memorial, which read as follows:-
The Buxton Headstone as it is today
Sacred to the memory of
MARY ANN BUXTON
Eldest daughter of Thomas and Mary Buxton
Who departed this life on the 18th of Nov; 1848
Aged 17
"Beneath the hallowed stone is laid,
in death's embrace, a spotless maid,
To this vain world she bade adieu
Before the ways of sin she knew.
Her parents may their offspring mourn,
And vainly wish for her return,
But humbly let them kiss the rod,
And yield her to her parent, God."
