Calais Lacemakers in the Hunter Valley
Gillian Kelly of The Australian Society of the Lacemakers of Calais contributed the information and family names of the Lacemakers of Calais in the Hunter.
'The Lacemakers arrived from England per 'Agincourt' & 'Fairlie' late in 1848 with a few stragglers into the early months of 1849. They have a long and complex history and I have a deal of information on most of them including a lot of family contacts. We had a great celebration in October 1999 - re enacted their arrival at the old wharf, Morpeth. We do have a society that's been alive and well for 15 years, and do have a journal and all sorts of records available! Almost 700 people came in this lot - and this was Maitland's share!
